The PHILCO Phorum

I picked this radio up a couple months ago.
The cabinet / wood are in realtively good condition, but need to be refinished. I'm working on that now.

first question:
I ordered new decals, but don't know the location on the knob decals. (ie: volume, tuning, off - on - tone, and PB / BC / SW.) what is the order? top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right.


second question:
the guy I bought it from assured me the radio works and if it doesn't he'll replace it (I know the phono does not), but the speaker and amp(?) are missing. I'm guessing he removed them for another project, but he said it worked. I'm not concerned with originality (and please don't blast me) but is there a simple way to hook up a modern / in-expensive speaker? (just to see if it works?). Would I need an amp for a small speaker? The radio appears to work (all lights and tubes look operable).

Based on the schematic, the speaker's field coil is part of the power supply which is typical. Shows on drawing to be 650 ohms. You could use a 500 ohm 10 watt resistor to get the B+ voltage up for a temporary test. But will need to find permanent speaker and wire that in too. Any size less than 6" should work as a test. Not sure about your question is about needing an amp, should be OK with push-pull output already there. Richard

I'll have to look that one up, to see how the decals should be placed...Kindly remind me if I forget, and I very well may forget since I am still recuperating from surgery.

Your radio's chassis includes the RF section that receives AM and SW signals as well as an audio amplifier and power supply; it does not have a separate amplifier.

Just because tubes and dial lamps light up does not mean a radio works! A radio should never be plugged in and turned on until it has been thoroughly checked for signs of trouble.

I just checked my Philco 46-1209 and here is the lay out: Left upper says OFF-ON-TONE. Left lower says VOLUME. Right upper says PB SC SW. Right lower says DIAL TUNING.
