OK I am a total Noob when it comes to refinishing cabinets, I'll admit it right up front . I need some expert advice. I have a Grunow cabinet. The sides and face have lacquer chipped and scratched off. The top was pretty bad too. I removed the lacquer on the top and found the wood stained and it appears that very little toner was used in the finishing process. What should I do with the finish I'd really hate to remove all the laquer and respray the entire cabinet, and If I do that I will lose the decals on the face, which are not replaceable. Help!! I'm no refinishing expert, but it seems to me that if the finish has a lot of damage, that stripping/refinishing may be the only option. Some fellows are able to selectively repair areas of a cabinet by just prepping and spraying the areas needing it. I tried this method on a 39-6 cabinet and a 40-150 cabinet. They look better than they did, but upon close examination you can tell they have been worked on.

Perhaps you could send Steve Davis a PM and ask his advice? Although, he uses a spray gun instead of the "spray bombs" of aerosol that I use (I don't have a compressor or spray gun setup).

I've been told that when you use paint remover, you can protect the decal and its surrounding and then try to match the old and new finishes.

I've also been told some people do custom water slide transfers.

but I haven't done any of those; on my recent radio I decided to refinish, I ended up removing the decal.

Thanks for the info, I looked up some info and found a way to "pull" the finish to cover the areas on light damage. I made my first attempt in the side and it came out pretty well. I, of course, didn't take any before pictures to post, but I had my wife and MIL look at the side and they had a hard time finding the repair, So I'm satisfied. I will take some pic's before I do the second side to post a little later.
