I really like my Philco 16B's for their exceptional AM and shortwave reception and listen to one nightly. Lately I've been hunting for the ultimate 30's Philco radios, namely the 37-690. Just noticed that nice one that was recently found on the forum.
Well I found and brought home this 1938 model at a great price. Very nice condition and 100% complete. Does have the back which many seem to be missing although not in the best shape. I've already pulled the chassis to get to work on it
Can't wait to get this one working the AM and shortwave dials!
Here is the 38-690 chassis...needs a good cleaning up and seems to be missing the red marker in the dial. This radio should really pull in the stations!
Nice find
Looks like the finish is in very condition and the chassis are unmolested
Thanks Bandersen.
The finish is very nice and the cabinet has no veneer missing. I don't think this radio has been touched for a long time. Underneath the chassis looks completely original, like it was never worked on which usually makes for an easier restoration.
How is your 37-690 coming along? That was a great find. I love the 37 cabinet .
Oh, I'm afraid I won't be working on the 37-690 for a while. I have a bunch of other projects ahead of it including a Brunswick 5KR and Philco 15DX I'm working on right now.
I may even luck out and find one, it would not surprise me if there was one of those or a Philco 680 further South of here, there have been people with money living at the Southern end of this island since the gold rush days.
Regards
Arran
I hope you do Arran. There seems to be alot of the 38-690 models found lately. The 37-690's don't show up as much.
I think the difficult thing will be to find the correct grill cloth. On Ebay a person sells one that has the exact pattern but it is a bit too dark
Power supply/amplifier chassis is recapped! Can't wait to fire this radio up. Need to get the radio chassis done
