What is it? Is it a AC/DC, ac, or farm set?? Gallery doesn't mention and Riders doesn't list it. Looks like a table model in a floor model cabinet.

Found the following at radiomuseum.org.

And I found the following at that other site, the name of which I forget:

The 38-17T and 38-17F were not released until mid-season 1938 (January '38 ).
Worth getting?? Seems a bit unusual.

The 38-17 should have a power transformer and an 84 rectifier.

From what I can see in the pic, the chassis is an AC/DC, which would make it a 38-14.

How big was the SW band?

For 35 smackers how can you go wrong?
I talked to the guy and it is a 38-17, that's what the blue sticker sez. So should be a AC set. The SW is 6-18 or so MC. I guess $35 ain't much these days. I could send RR a pic of it as the gallery doesn't have one.
Terry
I've seen sets like that before, but not a Philco, someone brought me a post War Canadian Stewart-Warner console with a 5 tube AC/DC chassis in it. I was one of those sets that made me wonder why they would have bothered making such a thing when they could have offered a table set with the same size speaker and at a cheaper price.

Yes, must be a 38-17, they didn't offer a 38-14 console.
And the SW band is commensurate with a 38-15/17.

Go ahead. What the hey?
Yes, go for it. For 35 bucks, you can't go wrong.

The power transformer is quite small, and is hidden behind the 75 tube (the tube with the metal frame around it).

And, yes, I think RR would appreciate a good photo. Icon_wink Icon_smile Good luck!
Ok guys I'll go over and get it. Now I can tell Mike my radio is bigger than his radio! ( He just got the table version of this set on epay supposedly restored and working)

Went over and got it. Definitely need some work. Funny on the CL pic the cabinet looks pretty good but in person it's not so good. Looks like someone brushed on some sort of clear finish on it. Didn't do a very good job at all. A chunk of the speaker cone is missing. Haven't pulled the chassis to see what the rubber wire looks like but i'll bet I can guess.
Anyway it is a sort of an unusually set so I'm happy with the purchase. Sorry for the dark pic couldn't seem to get good lighting. Ron, I'll take a better pic of it for the Gallery.
Tnx

It should have cloth-covered wire inside, Terry...but the wiring may be suffering from dry rot, so try not to move it around if possible.

Yup, things can look much better in photos than they do in "real life."

I look forward to the pic for the Gallery, thank you!
Tnx for the info on the wire. That should make life a bit easier! Would you know is there any photo finish on the cabinet?? The front looks like it has some inlay but don't want to find out the hard way that it's not real!
Tnx

Got a chance to give it a quick once over. Got the chassis out and it looks to be in good shape. Dial cord was broken so I fixed that up and the dial is pretty beat, has a few tears in the foil so I may be on the hunt for a replacement. Put a new line cord on and wiped off the toobs. All are original except for the 84. The cap on the 6A7 was loose but on closer inspection there was a crack in the glass and a bit of air in the toob. Looked a little white at the bottom. That one has to go. The cabinet is a mess. Someone painted it with a thin coat of brown paint and did a sloppy job. The original colors show through this stuff but definably going to need to be refinished. The speaker has a giant hole but I'm pretty sure I can fix her up. So Ron would you like a pic of it now or wait till I do the cabinet or both??? Was just looking at the Gallery pics and only $5 difference between the table and floor models Amazing!!!!

ps The good new is I was trolling CL and found a nice model 70 cabinet for $25. Needs an arch but I think it's going to turn into a model 21 cabinet.
