The PHILCO Phorum

Hello everyone,

I have a Philco 46-1201 Bing Crosby special, and I was wondering how to remove the back, to clean the inside without damaging the radio-(it is very dusty & dirty). I just cannot figure it out. The radio works perfect, but the phonograph does not. The radio cabinet is in very, very good condition. Any helpful ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Phorum!

There are a few Phillips-head screws which hold the radio back in place. Be sure you do not remove the hex-head screws; these hold the radio chassis in place!

For further access to the set's interior, open the door where the record slides in. Look for two small conical-shaped metal pieces, one on either side of the door. Push these in and then you may pull the upper part of the unit up and away from the base of the set.

Please do be very careful while cleaning, so as not to disturb any wiring or tubes, and do NOT use any type of liquid on the inside of the dial scale!

Thank you very much for your reply. I was thinking that that might be the way to do it, but wasn't sure. I did not want to damage the radio. I have books on cleaning & restoring radios and recapping. One of the books is "Antique Radio restoration guide" by David Johnson. I plan on being very careful & safe while cleaning.

Dave Johnson's book is an excellent guide for the newbie. Even if you're not a newbie, there are great tips that he passes along.
