As I attempt this restoration project I am sure I will be here many times with some questions.Right now I am in the process of testing some components and making a list of things to order. I have removed the RF sub-chassis to start with as I figure it will be the worst part of the whole job so lets get it out of the way first. In doing so I have discovered a bad band #2 oscillator coil. I am in the middle of trying to find a source for this part or the info needed to rewind it. But right now I would like to know what kind of line cord to order. Did it originally use a cloth covered cord or a vinyl cord that is on it now but not original? That's it for now but I'm sure more questions will follow as I get deeper into this. It was previously butchered by someone with things being jumpered, components hanging, things disconnected and other abnormalities! I am enjoying the experience though for now. Thanks for any and all help.

Good question. 1937 was the year that Philco switch over to rubber from the older cloth cover rubber wire.
On your coil is the outside winding the open one??
I'm sure you'll really enjoy this set once it all back together!!

There are several threads on that coil. One is only a couple of days old.
All of the ones I have seen have had the brown rubber cord, usually not in to bad of shape, but changed them out anyway.

I believe the outside is bad. The coil has 5 terminals that should have continuity between all 5. I have continuity between 1&2, 2&3, and 1&3. No reading between any of those and 4 or 5 or between 4&5 either.If I read my micrometer right it looks like #38 or maybe #40 gauge magnet wire.

I also have a question concerning the speaker plug. This radio doesn't have a plug mounted to the speaker that I can see. Instead, there are 5 wires with individual pins on the ends that are inserted into some kind of socket one at a time and I know this can't be right. I would think all 5 wires would be in some kind of plug that should fit some kind of socket. Any body have an idea or a close up picture of a 37-116 speaker and plug assembly. Thanks for any help.

Mike, thanks much for the reply and pic! Mine isn't anything like that one. Someone in the past has done a real butcher job on this radio. Under the chassis there are numerous parts just scabbed on top of others, some not even soldered in place. They also evidently did some rewiring of the speaker eliminating that plug and socket. So now all I need is to figure out what to use for a socket and plug and where I can find one. Thanks again so much for your reply.

Early versions of the 37-116 have the five individual pins which connect to five individual connectors arranged in a row on the speaker. Later production 37-116 sets have the plug and jack as shown in Mike's (Morzh's) link.
In other words, you have an early version 37-116 and the five individual connectors are correct for your set.
OK thanks Ron. It's just that seems like a strange setup to me. So now I won't need to search for a plug and socket! This phorum is the best.

Hi guys and gals, it's been a while since I worked on this but now winter is here and so I am back at it. I have all the bakelites and electrolytics restuffed along with the bad resistors being replaced. Now I need to know if the Mag Tuning switch #42-1216 is available anywhere? I checked Play Things Of The Past with no luck. This switch is actually a 2 part unit. First part is for the Magnetic tuning and the second part switches the pilot lights off. It is actually this second part that is burned out. That part is piggy backed onto the first one so maybe somebody makes a SPST replacement that could be mounted in place of the burned out section. Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Some large relays (or old ones) might have very similar contacts. If you are mechanically apt you can try fit those in.
Along with the band 2 coil, all of those switches are intermittent/bad. It has 2 functions, turning on the lights and turning on the mag tuning. You can use regular De-oxit on that switch and it will probably work for a while. While not impossible to find, unlikely to find a better one.
Wait till you have to set up the magnetic tuning (if you think the switch is fun).
