Not always. I have had the HV winding break down slowly and after a radio is finished just prior to shipping. That is why I suggest 15 min, even if it looks good at first. Too late after it is back in the tar.


350V on one side of this transformer sounds a little low. Depends on the primary voltage. I always make sure that mine will run at 120V.

+1. My Philco Tropic 42-720 seemed OK at first when I applied power after replacing the bad 6X5. 30 minutes later, it was smoking like crazy and the transformer was hot as...well, you know...
