Does any one have a needle that would work in this cartridge ?
[Image: http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm38/wb4yvo/jj%20023_zpsjhgn0l4w.jpg]
West tech services wants 15.00 for needle. That's Ok but I don't want to spend that and then the cartridge doesn't work. I just need something to verify the cartridge works ..

I will probably never find BOL parts cheap!!! and since I need all the parts that get expensive..

Help!!

Well, I was able to get a needle for that old cartridge. I plugged the changer into radio and then was able to hear noise when I scratched the needle. That's good. But when I tried to turn the turntable it wanted to go then nothing. No movement. when I turn the switch to manual I assume its supposed to rotate. It doesn't..

Since I am not a mechanical type of person.. Where do I start to look. I have the info on changer supplied by chuck. I don't even know where to start on this..

Any help please??

I would check for power to the motor first. If it has power going to it try cleaning the motor and lubing it. Might do the trick. Then if the motor runs check the drive , make sure it is turning and pushing against the platter.

Well, I have 120 volts AC to motor. The platter was not moving. I did hear the motor start to turn. then nothing.

I will pull turntable out of radio and try to make a stand for it so I can see what its doing.. I think motor is good.

I will try to take pictures of bottom. maybe a part out of place or missing?

Yes.with the platter off the motor should turn . If not lube itis turning make sure and check if another part is holding it back. If everything is turning make sure the the drive gear presses against the platter well. if motor doesnt seem to have power clean and lube it, which should be done anyway.

Ok will do.. Pictures to follow as soon as I check with platter off.... Going to look at it now.

Thanks

Missing wires on Connector.. I think the connector was modified  to work with a non BOL cartridge

RE: Philco Beam of Light - Arran - 05-26-2015

It looks like it has the typical issues with petrified grease, and rotted motor mounts. It's very likely that it was a 78 RPM only player that it hasn't even been plugged in 50 years or more.
With regards to rebuilding the Webcor cartridge, it's a waste of time and money to send it off and get it rebuilt since it isn't original to begin with. If you want to get the phonograph working get a more modern cartridge from Voice of Music or fleabay and retrofit it to fit the old BOL head, not the other way around. Then, if you should happen upon some Philco BOL parts, it will be much easier to convert it back.

Arran

pic 3 when turn table is up make sure the lever and wheel are not stuck
should be able to move large wheel by hand
should  clean old grease off and add new grease before you do any thing else

RE: Philco Beam of Light - Edisla - 05-26-2015

Looks like mine.

2nd pic, the motor is under the wheel. It should be on the side of the wheel. I know that doesn't fix your problem just saying.

Awkward unit to tinker w/ on a table. I used empty toilet paper rolls on each corner Icon_smile

RE: Philco Beam of Light - Warren - 05-26-2015

The motor on my 47-1230 phono wouldn't move until I took it apart and cleaned and lubed it up. Might help. Like Arran said the petrified grease doesn't help.

RE: Philco Beam of Light - vecher - 05-26-2015

Well, I agree. I took off motor from the Changer and powered it up. Worked no problem..I will clean it up and re-grease. My next problem is to try to find some replacements for the mounting ..All dried up. Here is a picture of assembly.

I will post for parts.. But if anyone knows where I can get something that would work Please let me know..

Thanks

Same motor # as mine.

I used 1/4" ID fuel line tubing and made new grommets.
