I installed an 11K pot....works better.
Also noted there was another cap, between the Ground (common, not chassis) and the 78 cathode. The one bypassing the volume pot.
It is not convenient to access. Then I though that if there is a leakagebit just acts in parallel with the volume pot and is small, and the capacitance is there and the cap is not stressed....so I decided to leave it be.
