Could be since your filament voltage is low, (due to the 50A5) is the reason your radio has 'other problems'.

Yeah that could be. But I noticed that somebody before me had worked on the speaker extensively and probably couldn't fix it .
Strangely ,I just discovered that a Philco 41-225 that I have has exactly the same chassis as the 41-220 except for the push button feature and it also has a 50A5 tube in it and it works OK. I do have a 35A5 coming and I will use it .
But I am sure the speaker has problems and I'm looking to get it rebuilt or purchase a good used one IF I can find one. There should be one out there somewhere since they probably made thousands of these radios. Thanks for your input.
