Satin clearcoat is always an option after you get the chassis cleaned to bare metal. It will keep the rust away and tends to look better than an overall spray of silver paint. If you do have to paint it, forget the hardware store and go to a good hobby store and buy metal simulation coating type sprays...they are pretty convincing.
Alclad II is the best but expensive.

Wow .You lucky dog. That's just the kind I like to find. I consider it kinda like an archaeological dig as I strip layer after layer of dust , mouse poop, and dirt dobber nests. I wonder where the radio has been ,who listened to it, etc. but of course I'll never know those things.
Looks like you are doing a great job so far.
