I would (wood Icon_lol ) sand it some more.

RE: Nathan's Philco 201X Cabinet - Seeking Advice - Nathan Slingerland - 08-04-2019

Heh - yes I did sand the wood some more before applying the wood bleach. I lightly sanded it again after it dried.
This did lighten the stain somewhat - it's less visible, though still there. I'm kind of wondering if it's something other than a typical water stain since it's brown rather than black.

In any case, here it is after grain-filling again and a coat of sanding sealer:

It's not perfect but should look decent enough once finish is back on.

Alright guys, thanks to all of your advice I have wrapped up the cabinet restoration of the 201X!

Electrical restoration was straight-forward though alignment was not trivial (similar to the later high-fidelity sets).

So this this afternoon I brought everything into the 'Radio Room' and put it back together.

Overall I'm really happy with how the top turned out - especially the color of the top. For that I used 2x light coats of Medium Brown walnut ultraclassic, followed by a light coat of Prefect Brown ultraclassic. The color matches the rest of the cabinet really closely and the water stain is no longer obvious.

On the other hand you can see that I went too dark with the trim. It came out a very dark brown - which I think still looks OK but isn't a perfect match. I applied multiple coats of Van Dyke tone finish toner for the trim but I probably should've made it Perfect Brown. I ended up applying more than I wanted in order to get it to come out even.

Anyway, I've been enjoying listening to it this afternoon. It's a great sounding set and I happen to LOVE the style of the cabinet (I know Kirk disagrees about this).  Icon_lol

Congratulations ! It looks beautiful. Personally, I like the contrast the dark brown has to the rest of the cabinet. Great job !

It is weird....
I dont really like the 201X because it looks like a pantsless radio.. Icon_lol
BUT in your finished photos it looks different.. Maybe having the correct colors and in tact grill cloth make the difference...
I did not realize the top had veneer inlays... UGh... Mine was missing the top veneer when I got it.
Doesnt matter though.. Mine is going to Terry, Icon_twisted

P.S. Fantastic job...

Kirk,
I think the one you don't like is the 200X. It's a bit different looking from the 201X.

RE: Nathan's Philco 201X Cabinet - Seeking Advice - Nathan Slingerland - 08-21-2019

Thank you all for the kind words. Icon_smile

Terry is right - there are a number of small differences between 200X and 201X cabinets.

This site has them side-by-side:

I don't really prefer one or the other myself.

Sorry to steal the post but do I have a 200X cabinet and a 201X chassis?
Still odd that I kind of like it with the grill cloth in place. Icon_smile

Which do I have?

Kirk

It looks like you have a 200X cabinet w/a 201X chassis.
Here are a couple or thing to check:
Is there a counter sunk hole for a toggle switch on the left side (facing from the front)? 201X would.
Does the hole look like it was done by the factory, same brown color as the rest of the inside of the cabinet?
Does the dial have two scales a bc band and a sw ? 201X would.
Could be what you have is a leftover 200X that Philco installed the later chassis at the beginning on the 201X run.
Grille cloth has been replaced as it should the chevron pattern. I'm thinking that it take 3 large pieces to replace w/the chevron. Eck!

He's got the 201X label. That's pretty good evidence that this pairing was original.

In fact Ron came across this exact combination before:

+1 what Nathan said. It looks like Philco put together some Phactory Phranken-Philcos to get rid of 200X cabinets with the then new 201 chassis.

Steve Geary (azenithnut on ARF) now owns the set I formerly owned.

Edit: Nathan, the set in the ARF thread you referenced is in fact the very same one I owned for awhile. John (Rocklandman) sold or traded it to me (I don't remember the details now), and when I started reducing the size of my collection last year, I sold it to Steve.
