Possible repairman's mistake it doesn't make since to put a .01 inline with the .25 .

OK, on to the condenser blocks, but first, a shameless plug. If you don't have these condenser tools, you really need to get a set, they make this job so much easier. A little twist of the cutter tool cuts the wires, heat the block and push the guts out with the punch tool. Then clean the terminals and install a new capacitor.

This particular capacitor is .15uf connected in parallel with the filter choke, it will be omitted. I simply gutted it, cleaned and reinstalled the empty block.

Steve nice tools i got some old wooden file handles around i could make a cheap and dirty copy been using a modified pin punch and hair dryer to get the tar out of these.

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Steve Davis - 12-11-2019

About half of the "Dogbone" resistors were out of tolerance, I went ahead and replaced all.

The filter capacitors were aluminum can replacements from years ago. So, the next step is off to my storage area to find a couple of Mershons to restuff.

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Jake Blake - 12-11-2019

What came originally , filter capacitor-wise,  in this radio?  Would they have been those Mershon capacitors?...or something marked "Philco"?

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Steve Davis - 12-11-2019

Jake, originally, it would have had Mershon or Sprague.

Steve

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Jake Blake - 12-11-2019

Ok,...thanks.
...so is there a way I can determine if the 610 originally came with Sprague, Mershon, Solar capacitors,. . . or cans branded Philco ?

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Steve Davis - 12-11-2019

Looking through my "Someday Kit" I found a 70 chassis that had a nice pair of Mershons it wanted to donate.

Now to get them apart without destroying them.

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Steve Davis - 12-11-2019

First, I cleaned and polished them. I taped one end to protect the can from being marked by the jaws of the lathe chuck. After polishing one end, I turned it around and finished polishing.

To open, I decided to grind the crimp on the bottom rather than removing the top, It just seemed to be a safer bet.

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Steve Davis - 12-11-2019

I'm using a 1/4 inch brass bolt for the terminal. Here I'm drilling the head of the bolt so I can solder in a number 12 buss wire.

I'm using six 2.2uf 630v film capacitors.

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - 462ron - 12-12-2019

Steve those Mershons look great! I have a 70 with Mershons that I will get to in the future and would like to know if after polishing them, do you spray them with clear lacquer to keep them bright? Thanks.

Ron

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Steve Davis - 12-12-2019

Ron, I was wondering the same thing. This morning, I look at them, they appear to already be tarnishing. I still have to stuff the second one after that, I think I will spray them.

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Kestas - 12-12-2019

If you've ever polished copper you'll find they need to be coated or they'll turn brown in no time.

RE: Philco 90 Restoration - Steve Davis - 12-13-2019

I installed two 4.7uf film capacitors in the other can to be used as the input filter. I then sprayed a coat of lacquer on cans and installed them in the chassis.

After one more good looking over, I'm ready for the "Smoke Test". I hooked up the speaker and brought it up slowly.
[Image: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49215184158_0aafb59ba0_k.jpg]100_0194 by Steve Davis, on Flickr

Oh no, I have a problem! The screen grid on one of the 47s is glowing bright orange! I quickly turned the radio off. Now, this is what happens when you get old. I bought this speaker on eBay and for some reason, I forgot to test it! One half of the primary of the output transformer is open. The speaker is not correct for this chassis anyway. This one is for an early 90 but, there is almost no hope of finding a speaker for a late 90. I will probably wind up buying universal replacement transformer. So for now, I pulled the speaker out of my Philco 20 as it is the only P-P speaker that I have that has the correct field coil resistance. So I try again. Wow! Its talking! I'm surprised, I figured the alignment would be so far off (remember I had the tuning condenser completely apart)  that it wouldn't pick up anything but, I have three or four stations coming in weakly. Maybe tomorrow evening I will have time to do the alignment.

Hmmmm....those caps sure look nice!  What is that machine you did that on?...is that a lathe?  Icon_question
