Good save!! Interesting solution by the previous person. I don't know, maybe I would have changed the cap or flowed the solder joints instead of the pencil trick.

I buttoned 'er up and am doing a burn in. I have it working pretty good. I never could quite get the disc alignment exact, but I could detune slightly and brought everything in very well. I honestly suspect the silver micas on the cans have gone out of spec some, but not enough to kill it. It's sensitive, stays on station and sounds good. I have another I want to bring up later and will have something to compare to. I'll drop a line a little later.

Tim;
Those miserable silver mica caps in those cans can detune things, but I've never determined whether it is because the capacity of them goes up, or down. Mostly what I run into is intermittent contact between the silver deposits and the outside world, which can detune the transformer. I've seen two viable methods for replacement, one is to measure the capacity of the old cap, the other is to remove the old cap, install a trimmer, and adjust accordingly, thereafter you can either leave the trimmer in place or measure it's capacity, and replace it with a silver mica or C0G/NP0 rated cap of the nearest value. To be truthful set with these problems tend to get put on the back of the pile, I have enough older radios without these junky IF cans in them to keep me busy for the next several years.
Regards
Arran

I think you are right on Arran! I had a 50's AM/FM with that silver mica problem and I sat it in the back. Likely parts. This FM3 sounds so good as compared to other tuners, it would be worth the effort. The sound quality is outstanding! If it drifts again, I'll probably redo the cans. I'm sure that's what was wrong with the disc coil. I could rock it and it would come and go, so probably as you mentioned, poor contact inside the can. I might experiment with the already open can and see what I can accomplish. I'm about to start a thread on my Fisher, and I suspect it has the same problem.
