Phil (Uffda) - If your Variac is a nice, hefty unit, I suppose you could use it on a regular basis (as far as I know). I would feel better with the bucking transformer setup, though, for long term use.

I guess I wasn't thinking clearly Ron. Even if I use it at 110V, I want to be able to power up for modern stuff. Your way will work
better for a daily driver away from the bench.
By the way the Powerstat is 12 amps.

I've chronicled this restoration in detail, with lots of photos. It's part of the Restoration Notebook portion of the Phorum:

I love watching the transformation. The notebook is such a valuable resource. Your 70 cabinet is telling me to contact Mr. Jones about a de-shame job on my 90 or 70 or both.

Ron I saved this pic for future use when I restore my 655B cabinet. Best photo I could find of one

FYI the model 640 has "650" stamped in ink on the back of the tuning capacitor frame too.

Wow I would have to install a polycarbonate back and have it lighted to show that all the time. Its so beautiful. I hope to do that to mine when I'm done
