I added a line bypass cap, and there wasn't a noticible difference in the hum, but after the set warmed up a few seconds I got a very very loud hum/buzz, like you get when the filter caps are bad. I think something blew. I pulled the condenser can and don't see any visible damage there. I'm going to step away from it for a couple of days and start from scratch. I think I'll replace the caps in the can again just to eliminate that as a problem and go from there, rechecking all of the wiring in the whole chassis.

Beware that back in the day this set was made there were not any flourescent lamps, dimmers, wall wart transformers, and new fangled light bulbs to murder AM radio. Worst offenders are battery chargers and cheap gadgets.
