After working a couple hours I'm still not there but it's definitely better. I got it away from the work bench where I have way too many other wires going here and yon and it sounds better in another room but, from about 775 on the dial down to the lowest frequency there's a severe motor boating, popping and squealing. I checked the dial position at a better and stronger station, along about 900 and it was coming in at 850 on the other radio. Looks like an alignment is necessary. Problem is I don't have a signal generator. From 850-1500 I pulled in lots of stations but below around 850 it's terrible. Any suggestions? I've replaced all paper caps, electrolytics and several suspect resistors. I measured the value of the other resistors and they were within spec or just a touch higher.
