I used brake cleaner. I obviously don't know what caused it but it's not dirt. I vacuumed tenderly before I started and got out a little dust. As long as it's been in the fabric, I don't think there is any way to remove it now. There was more fraying than I originally thought so aggression is not appropriate now.
The pattern of the stain hints that something burst or exploded near the top and some kind of fluid ran down to the bottom. The residue is very thick there. The grille bars show some evidence that whatever it was affected them slightly.
I'm off to find some copper-toned spray paint.

Here it is almost mid-April. I'm wanting warm weather to start on cabinet and we got freezing rain and cold last night. Look out cabinet when warm weather gets here!!!
