Peter;
Is the Catkin tube the one with the aluminium shield over it? I presume that is to stop the user from coming into contact with the anode? There were some British receiving tubes/valves made by Cossor that used an external top cap to connect the anode, here the only tubes that did that were RF power output tubes like 807s, mercury vapor rectifiers, and horizontal output tubes in TV sets like a 6BQ6, but they liked to use insulated caps for those, or placed them inside a metal box.
Regards
Arran

Hello Arran. There were two types of Ketkin tube designs, - with an aluminum protective screen like the left tube in the photo and with an open anode like the tube in the center. The protective screen was used only on low-power pentodes, perhaps it had another function - shielding the low-power anode from interference, and this screen was absent in the output pentodes, perhaps for better cooling of the anode. This is just my version and I am not convinced of this.

One of the first mass superheterodynes in Germany is the four-tube superheterodyne Siemens 36VL of 1933. The main difference between this radio and classic superheterodynes is the intermediate frequency amplifier, detector and first low-frequency stage implemented on just one radio tube triode, which are implemented according to the scheme .... regenerator. ) It cannot be said that such a scheme greatly simplified the complexity of the design, but it allowed to reduce the number of radio tubes, and therefore the cost of the receiver. But at the same time it reduced the stability of its operation and reliability. Therefore, this radio has only two ranges Long and Medium waves, and its sensitivity is inferior to classic superheterodynes. Receivers of this type were manufactured only until 1935...36.
But... If we look at the chassis, we will see that this is a real solid Siemens...

Hello Peter,
I really like that cabinet style .

Sincerely Richard

RE: The list of my radio & TV collection! - RadioSvit - 12-19-2025

Hi Richard. This style is based on the design of furniture that was made in Austria, Bavaria and Switzerland. Before World War II, Austrian furniture cabinets with rounded corners were very popular, exactly like the design of this radio. Similar design elements are observed on most Austrian and German radios of the 30s, 40s and 50s.
And in the United States, this design of radio console cabinets was also very popular

Yesterday I made a video with the fifth final part on the restoration of the General Electric A-87 radio console. Despite the fact that I finished the restoration last summer, for various reasons I only finished the video now. I share a link to it on my YouTube channel.

"General Electric A-87 radio console. Canada. 1936. Part 5. Completion of restoration and demonstration of work."

This project on the restoration of the old 1936 model A-87 radio console of the Canadian branch of the American company General Electric was started in the winter of last year and completed in early autumn. During this time, four videos were shot about the process of restoring the body and repairing the chassis, and this fifth video is the final one.

However, this is just one project out of 12 that I completed last year, so in the next video I will talk about the next completed project - the restoration of a 1936 model 6D632 radio console from another Canadian manufacturer of beautiful and stylish radios - the De Forest Crosley company.

Hey Pete, what a nice weather have you in Western Ukrain right now Icon_lol

RE: The list of my radio & TV collection! - RadioSvit - 01-31-2026

Ohh. We now have snow, frost and no electricity for 10 hours a day due to rocket attacks on our energy infrastructure... Icon_cry Even my solar power plant does not always cope with such long periods of lack of electricity in the power grids and I have to turn on the gasoline generator. I shot this video in the summer and edited it now - nostalgia for the summer when it was warm. Icon_e_wink

We had some extreme (for us) temps over here. During last night it droped to -19C where I am and to -21C where I work.

They have sub-freezing in upper Florida during the nighttime, which is...

RE: The list of my radio & TV collection! - RadioSvit - 01-31-2026

We had this temperature at night for almost two weeks. And it wouldn't be a problem if there was a stable supply of electricity.

Another video about a project completed last year - a complete restoration of the 1936 Canadian De Forest Crosley 6D632 radio console
It's hard to even imagine how fast time flies, but this amazing radio turns 90 this year!

Another new video about last year's projects. This time - "General Electric S-22 Junior Radio Restoration - Cabinet Paint and Capacitors"

Looks nice!

RE: The list of my radio & TV collection! - RadioSvit - 03-02-2026

Thanks Michael. But there is one more unresolved problem - I need to refresh the pattern on the fabric, because it has faded. I'm thinking how best to do it, maybe paint it with a tinting solvent?

Hello Peter,
What nice looking set the "General Electric S-22 Junior Radio"
I am looking forward to watching the video.

Sincerely Richard
