I made my own adapter using the tube manual as a guide, but without a voltage doubler which is what I assume is in Mr Turner's adapter, so I just ran it on 6.3 volts instead of the 12.6 volts. I did this more as an experiment then as a genuine desire to replace a 6U5/6E5 in a restoration, I'm kind of indifferent as to whether my set has a fresh eye tube or not as it's mostly just a gimmick. This isn't an issue with this brand Z model or with other sets that have the magic eye mounted well above the chassis but in some sets, like ones where the eye is mounted lower down, there simple isn't room for the adapter.

Arran, what radio that uses the full size eye tube doesn't have room for the adaptor? Just curious as I've never run across one.

I think I mentioned at least two before, one is the Canadian RCA A-23 another is a CGE JK-70/JK-76 but in those sets the eye tube is viewed right through the backing plate in the middle of the dial. There are probably a few others that may not have clearance for an eye tube adapter, a Canadian RCA 911K may be another as it's mounted at the same level as the pushbuttons just below the corner of the dial.

That's the same link and procedure I used for taking apart the shutter dial on my 9-S-262. I was pretty intimidated at the thought of disassembling it and luckily John posted that procedure. Once you get one under your belt it's not so bad but it's that first one that's a bit scary. I considered doing a YouTube video on how to take it apart and put it back together again but once I had it all together I didn't have the motivation to take it all apart again for filming.

As I recall, when I bought the tube/socket from Bill, I purchased it with the wiring in tact. He had a option so I didn't need to use the existing wiring or socket. Worked wonderfully after straightening out the internal wiring on the tube socket which was wrong. Bill corrected that on new ones. Probably just an error on assembly of the package. Yes, a little longer than the original but worked very nicely. The radio was far from "original" with a PM speaker so, what the hay.

I tried posting my own advice about the eye tube. I don't have a lot of experience with much of this stuff but I do know what the correct tube is for this radio. For my efforts I was ignored and trivialized, as is usual on almost any internet forum I've participated on.

I am really tired of the kind of treatment I receive. I won't offer any advice any more. I wanted to get something, anything right just once, and what did I get for my efforts? Same old same old.

Okay, so returning briefly to this set...

I pulled the chassis out of the cabinet again today. As soon as I set it on the bench, the dial glass fell off, since it only had one clamp sort of holding it in place. Luckily, I caught it before it had a chance to break. Whew!

After taking this photo, I packed the AM shutters and the disk for "Off-Local-Distance" back up, as I am not yet ready to use these.

I took the upper clamp piece and attached it to the lower part of the clamp which holds the eye tube in place. Just for fun, I reinstalled the dead 6T5 also:

Remember that potentiometer that was connected to nothing, just taking up space where the off-on-local-distance switch should go?

Well, I had a few special switches that I had bought on eBay a couple years ago for use in Philco 19 and 89 sets. This combines an off-on switch for AC power with a two pole, three position rotary switch. Using one of the two pole sections for local-distance, and the AC switch for power, this will be an excellent replacement for the original off-on-local-distance switch once I wire it into the circuit:

The switch will require a coupler and extension so the shaft will be long enough. I see Radio Daze sells both, so I'll have to make an order soon.

I also purchased a dial glass gasket from Mark Palmquist. Using that, and the second dial glass clamp from "thirtiesradio," I put the dial glass back on the chassis. It now looks like this:

I also figured out where the dial lamp was supposed to be mounted, and put it back into its proper place.

The chassis is back in the cabinet again. Sometime in the near future, I'll work on this some more.

Nice progress Ron, I hope you keep us up to date. The Phorum community is great in offering help for parts and ideas. Waiting to see how this comes out.
