Thanks Ron.
Being my first attempt at a large transistorized stereo I lean toward it being my error somewhere that caused the condition. The one thing I hope points to something simple is after the pop when first turned on it plays just fine with no noise and good selectivity and sensitivity.

It could be that your left and right channels were out of phase with one another...or else there is a problem with the Lafayette MPX decoder. Most likely the former.

You can say that again! I bought my Fisher 400 at Kutztown back in May for $275. On the auction site they usually ask double or more. And you can't find a 500 or 800 there for less than $1000.
