Philco decals - Guest - 11-26-2005

Chuck, I'm going to need replacement decals for my 630B. After the re-finish, I'll need a new one. I need to pick your brain tofind a good source--Rock-Sea? Can you give me a few links?

Tubenutt, I have picked up some from Rock-Sea and they are high quality and a good match. I wouldn't hesitate recommending them to anyone.

TN,

Take ACCURATE measurements of the original decal BEFORE you strip the cabinet!!!! Otherwise you will not be able to match the correct one on the decal sheet. There are variations in the logo sizes.

Rock-Sea is #1.

Mike Tobin contacted me and I collaborated on the correct dimensioning of the various incarnations of PHILCO logos and other Philco decal nomenclature.

Mike's your man.

As an aside, I also helped Mike with the correct Emerson "Treble Clef" logo as well, in case you ever need one for your Emerson collection.

I agree with Chuck, what I do is measure the height of the decal and the width and if you have any doubts take a picture and send the pictures along.

Thanks guys..I figured as much--I bet AES doesn't have 'em anymore--what is their website URL, Icon_confused:

AES decal sheets for Philco are WRONG. That's the reason Mike and I collaborated. I was not satisfied with what I got from AES - wrong sizes and poorer screening details and some misregistration of bordered edges.

(The Emerson sheet I also got had a horrible rendition of the Treble Clef and that was also "fixed" by Mike and I on the Rock Sea sheets.)

Good point on the SIZES (and quality) of the AES sheets; however, the STYLE of the Philco trademark (for 1937 and newer Philco sets) is RIGHT on the AES sheets. Mike is a great guy and provides wonderful products, but his "bold font" Philco trademark decals look nothing like the originals.

On the other hand, his "narrow font" Philco trademark decals are as close as you can get to the 1932-36 style. Not dead-on, but close.

Not trying to provoke any arguments...but I'll provide photos later to illustrate my point. (Man, I wish I had a digital camera right now.)

Ron, you should relay this info on the incorrect ones to Mike. I did not have a sample from my collection of this one, so you input will be welcomed to "fix" this one. Icon_smile

{I used a 1/32" graduated steel rule and a micrometer for dimensions and font and border thicknesses measurements.}

Oh, I will...as soon as I take the pictures and get them developed, I'll post them here *and* forward them to Mike. He does such good work that I am sure he can straighten out those "bold font" Philco trademark decals in no time. Icon_smile

Okay, here are the results I promised...

First, let's take a look at an original Philco decal from a Model 41-221CI, typical of 1937 and newer PHILCO decals. Following that, the largest size of the PHILCO decal on the AES sheet, and finally, a Rock-Sea reproduction.

Compare the above carefully. See what I mean? The AES decal (middle) is identical to the original above it. The Rock-Sea repro is different; not only in font style but in height.

Now let's compare an original 1932-36 Philco decal from a 16B tombstone to the only currently available repro, from Rock-Sea:

The Rock-Sea repro is very close to the original, but not quite identical. Notice how the P and H are different, the L is shorter, and the C is not rotated back slightly as on the original.

I'll be sending this info to Mike at Rock-Sea also...
