Philco 38B Cabinet - Mountainfire - 01-15-2016

Hello All, My name is Roger and new to the group. I have a few years under my belt restoring radios but have never ventured into Philco Land. I recently purchased a mix of several radios in a group sale. Out of that group is a Philco Model #38 Cabinet w/speaker(NO Chassis). With some research and help from a friend of the Phorum we identified this set using a farm(battery chassis).
My questions are:
Is there a possibility of finding a battery chassis for this set?
Is there another AC chassis that uses this same cabinet?
If battery chassis found can it be converted to AC?

Thanks in Advance for any info.

I can't tell you if there any AC units that would fit but there are a number of posts online about building a battery eliminator to power the unit. If you just want to buy something I've seen this unit online but can't say I've bought one.

Here's some info on your model. The model 38 was made for several years before your model in 1936 and came in different cabinet styles. Look back in years in Ron's gallery to see some of them.

Roger

Rather than hijack someone else's thread why not open your own?

The 60 is the AC version of the 38. 60B should fit it.

Hello, Mountainfire (Roger). I can tell you that the model 60 used this same cabinet (among many others; if you want to learn more about the 60, see http://www.philcoradio.com/tech/60evol.htm).

So..if you would prefer an AC-operated chassis inside your 38B cabinet, then look for a model 60 chassis. They are not hard to find. And if you want to keep it original, Model 38 chassis are not hard to find, either. You already have the Model 38 speaker so you're ahead there if you do decide to keep it original. Be advised, though, that if you decide to put a model 60 chassis inside that you will also need a Philco S-7 electrodynamic speaker (the type of speaker used with Model 60). Also not terribly hard to find.

Good luck!

Thanks to all for the great info. I will probably lean toward an AC set.
