Problem with Philco 37-61 - Guest - 01-21-2009
Hello, and please bare with me because I'm a newbie to repairing radios. I've been reading every book I can find on the subject.
I recently puchased a 37-61, and I found the 5Y4G rectifier tube to be bad, and the 6F6G Output tube tested as having a shorted cathode, on my recently puchased tube tester. I replaced the tubes, and the radio now plays and receives several stations. When It first warms up, you can turn the volume control up and it sounds OK, but after it's been on a minute or two, it still sounds ok at low volume, but the more you turn it up, the more distorted the sound becomes. Where should I look for a problem. The only test equipment I have so far is the tube tester, and a volt meter, so I'm sort of limited. Thanks in advance for any input.
Glenn

Has the radio been recapped? You really should do that, you know.
If not, try replacing the cap that goes to the grid of the 6F6.

Thanks for your input, Exray. I'll try that one cap first.
