Help ID this floor model - 462ron - 08-24-2017

Hello all, can anyone help me identify brand and model number of this console? Thanks

Ron

The dial, escutcheon, knobs, and shadow meter put me in mind of a US Apex or Gloritone.

Thanks Jayce. This radio belongs to the daughter of a friend. She just bought it for display purposes but her dad would like to get it working. Trouble is we are in PA and the radio is in MA. I couldn't make out the name on the escutcheon but he tells me it says "Radiotrope". I did find info stating it was made by Apex Electric but can't find a pic of this exact model to put a definite model or chassis number to it!

The escutcheon does look like one of the Apex's.

Gloritone, US Apex, and Radiotrope were all made by U.S. Radio and Television Corporation in Marion, IN.

If you get a tube line-up and chassis picture we might be able to find the schematic.  Also tell your friend to look for labels on the inside of the cabinet that might have a model number.  It's a nice looking radio and I've always liked that style of dial, it also looks like it has a shadow-graph or meter for a tuning indicator.

Yes John I told him to see if he could get his daughter to find labels or numbers on the chassis and a tube layout diagram inside the cabinet. I think he is more interested in getting it up  and going than she is. He is in PAand she has the radio in MA. I hope he can get some numbers on it as I am curious about it myself, it is a beautiful set!

Hi all, Well this radio finally made its way from MA to my bench in PA. The friend of mine was visiting his daughter and brought it home with him. I have some pics attached above. So, in all this time I haven't found much about this rare bird. It appears to be a Radiotrope #1016 or 1010, the label is a little fuzzy. Looks to be an early 30s superhet. There's no tube placement chart in it, but it has 10 tubes as follows:....
4- #27
 3- #35
 2- #47
 1- #80
It also has a tuning or signal strength meter. I would appreciate any info on this and also need a schematic. Thanks

Ron

Maybe you can find a schematic that fits under Apex or Coronado...

There are about 4 different listings in RMorg for variants of the Apex 10.

Palegreenthumb, thank you sooo much. This is just what I need. It is weird that I have a Radiotrope but the print is an Apex. One question, some of these prints show the tubes beginning with a "2", such as  a 35 is a 235. Even the 80 rectifier is shown as a 280? Thanks again!

Gloritone, US Apex, and Radiotrope were all made by U.S. Radio and Television Corporation in Marion, IN, so the same chassis may have been used in different models, but only one of those, Apex in your case, showing up in Riders.

A prefix was used on early tubes to indicate the manufacturer.  The most common examples are RCA and Cunningham that used a 2 or 3, so a Cunningham would be a 380 and RCA a 280. Typically the globe style tubes used the prefix which was dropped when the newer ST style tubes came out.  Your 80 is just a later version of a 280 and is interchangeable.

Thanks John for the clarification!

I started on the chassis and noticed it has many dogbone resistors. I quickly ohmed a few of them but not all yet. So far most are pretty close but not all. Is it overkill and not necessary to just replace them all or only the bad ones? This radio will be going back to MA so I want it to be reliable. Just wondering what you guys usually do. Thanks.

Ron

RE: Help ID this floor model - Arran - 05-01-2018

If they are very close, lets say withing 20% or less of where they should be, then there is no need to change them. Some BED coded resistors were pretty stable, others were junk that have drifted way upward in value, I don't know if this has to do with the manufacturer or with the Wattage they used, some companies, like RCA, liked to cut it pretty close using the lowest Watt rating they could get away with.

Well it lives to play another day. This chassis was hacked in the past. Parts replaced with the wrong value. The strangest thing was a lot of the wiring is bundled in a harness and I found 3 separate sections of wire about 4" long in the bundle that were cut on both ends. No sign of what or where they connected to, just 3 strips of wire nestled in there with nowhere to go! After the recap, I traced everything out and never did find what they were for but when I fired it up, she sang.
I replaced several dogbone resistors that were bad and that left me with 4 good originals. I ended up replacing them too as I figured what the heck, it's only 4 more. It will be going back to MA so I felt better replacing those 4 in the hopes of making the radio more reliable. Now to give it an alignment, although it performs well already! Many thanks to those that helped me identify this radio and put me onto the schematic.
