Philco Model 048 all purpose set tester -
Blaine - 04-06-2009
Just acquired a model 048 set tester , ordered some literature from the Philco Repair Bench. I know this unit used batteries. Are there modern day battery packs that one can use in this unit ? And has anyone converted it to Electric. I just love the Philco test equipment. Thanks for any info.......

If this is the one that uses the little P-15-135 22.5 volt battery, I've done them before.
This is a very rudimentary version--I think I can do better now.

Bill,
The 048 Tester uses four battery voltages. The VOM section uses a 4.5 volt for the ohms function (isolated from the other cells).
The Sig gen section uses two voltages; 1.5 and 22.5. The two voltages are in "series" in the battery. the (+) of the 1.5 cell is common to the (-) of the 22.5 and brought out to a terminal (3 terminals). Can't clearly see the socket on the top of your battery pic.

The battery is a five-pin socket with various taps totalling 22.5 volts.

The two sets of battery voltages need to be separate. Here is the partial schematic.
The VOM section is to the right and Sig gen on the left.

Looks like the VOM battery has two "taps" at 3 and 4.5 volts. No total battery voltage given.
9 volts? 12 volts maybe?

There is one other thing--along with the 22.5, I think the rig takes a couple of D cells as well.

That would be two D-cells in parallel for the 1.5 volt filament, as shown, for the number 30 tube, I assume.

Sounds right--I've never seen one of them in the flesh, but I remember making batteries for one.

Here's a socket layout of that particular 22.5 battery....[Image:

Just add more info to the "fire."
Reading sales flyers for the 048, it mentions battries (plural) and probes included.
Looks like there are two B-C A-B battery packs in there then. Makes sense since the two units in the same box are originally two separate test sets updated to make up the 048.

You know, I don't think I made one for this unit then.
More I think about it, I think it was for an 024. I assume this unit incorporates the 024 and some other equipment?

Thank you very much.................. I will visit my local Radio Shack tomorrow and buy some batteries.
