Mohawk Tone Lacquer & Sanding Sealer Steps??? - Lewiss - 10-19-2018

Hi All,

1st time using the Mohawk Lacquer Toner, Sanding Sealers.
Philco 80Jr Radio.
Using Mohawk Ultra Classic Toner Ultra Medium Brown Walnut M100-0207 for front of radio.
Using Mohawk Ultra Classic Toner Ultra Perfect Brown M100-0249 for the sides, outer front, and bottom edge.

Read about as much as I can find on the net and forums.
Question does a coat of sanding sealer need to be applied between coats of the lacquer toner??

Here's the steps I think, is this correct?

1. Sand cabinet
2. Apply a coat of Mohawk Heavy Bodied Sanding Sealer M102-0491.
3. Lightly sand.
4. Apply a coat of Mohawk Heavy Bodied Sanding Sealer M102-0491.
5. Lightly sand.
6. Apply a light coat of Toner.
7. Apply light coat of Toner.
8. Lightly sand.
9. Apply wet coat of Toner.
10. Repeat till desired color darkness is achieved.
11. Lightly sand between coats.
12. Apply coats of Semi Gloss Tone Finish M102-0419.
13. Lightly sand between coats.

Does this look correct?
Also should Tone Finish Lacquer Sanding Sealer M102-0423 be applied over the toner?
If so, at what step #?

Thanks for your help

No.

If the grain filler is oil based:

1. Filler
2. Sealer
3. Toner
Top coat (gloss Lacquer in most cases)

If the filler is water based (chrystalac)

1 Sealer
2. Filler
3. Toner
Top coat (Which may be many coats)

Sanding is OK EXCEPT the toner coat. If you mess up the toner, remove all and start over.
Sanding the toner will result in uneven(ness) and streaks. You can put sanding sealer on the toner and sand that.

Thanks,

I thought I read somewhere not to use filler on the 80jr.

That is probably true. I don't think it has any open grain wood. Instructions were - in general.

OH and P.S.

I forgot to add that you can use shellac as filler/sanding sealer in the order:

1. Dye

2. Shellac

3. Done -or - Top coat lacquer - or - toner and top coat

I am doing one of these right now which is more typical in 1920's radios.
