Philco 38-4 My first try at radio restoration - Guest - 12-17-2009
Hello Philco Phorum; I'm new to radio repair and this forum, but from what i have been reading this seems like a great place to hang out. I have become the proud owner of a handsome Philco 38-4 floor model. After i started to t/s i believe the P/T is bad. I'm working off the schematic posted on nastalgia air web site trying to put together the specs. for the transformer but i think its over my head. It lists ohm readings for the windings only i dont see a high voltage output value. I would also need its current capacity for output windings in order to find a replacement. I have located a P/T from a Philco model 38-1 but its for a 12 tube chassis, the 38-4 is 8 tubes. It is much larger physically but would it work electrically? If not what be the best way to find a suitable power transformer so a get this radio to play again. Thanks Ed

Will I think the first thing to do is pull the 5Y4 and measure between pins 3 and 5 you should have about 600v ac. If you do then your power transformer more than likely OK. If not you will be looking for a power transformer. What you will need to replace it is 120v primary Secondaries HV 600 to 650vac ct @ 90ma 6.3vac @3a 5v@2a. That will give you 250-300vdc.
