Better Source For Solen Caps - Mondial - 11-29-2021

Recently I needed a set of polypropylene film filter caps for a vintage communications receiver restoration. Have been buying the Solens from AES in the past, but now found a better place to buy them.

Tube Depot is selling the same Solens considerably cheaper ( $7.95 for a 15 uF, 630V vs $10.45 from AES) plus their shipping charges are also much less.

At these prices it makes sense to use these rather than electrolytics if you have the room, especially for the first cap right after the rectifier. Nice to know you will never need to replace the filter cap again.

Hey Mondial! How are you? Long time no hear.

Thank you for this link. Lower prices for the same product is always better. Icon_thumbup Plus they carry 6.8 uF Solens, which would be good replacements for the 6 uF electrolytics used in 1931 Philcos such as the 70, 90, and late 112 plus easier to fit into the original Mershon or Sprague electrolytic cans.

Icon_thumbup Thanks for the heads up ! It's amazing how much condensers have progressed in even the last 20 years !

Wow, good $1.50 to $2 difference with AES (this is where I got mine).
I probably should stock up.

Most useful are the 8.2uF and 6.8uF.

Isn't Tube Depot and AES at the same location?

I bought a bunch of these on sale a few years ago.

I have looked for similar caps at Mouser. Never found anything that didn't cost a ton $.

All axial caps with these parameters are non-stock in Mouser.

AES is in Tempe, AZ; Tube Depot is in Memphis, TN.

Russ, you may be thinking of Amplified Parts which is the same outfit as AES. Plus, they may also go by another name as well.

Mike - Mouser's radial caps in large values such as what we need for electrolytic replacement in vintage radios are not cheap either, as Russ said. I used some film radials to replace 1 and 2 uF paper caps in my Philco 87 and 65 radios, and they weren't exactly cheap.

Hi Ron,

Yes its been a while. Have been away from Philcos for a few years while my interests went toward vintage ham radio gear. Checked in occasionally but haven't posted.

Was reading the posting regarding the 86 restoration where Radioroslyn suggested the film cap filters and remembered where I got them last. Thought you guys might find the link useful

Greetings to all the crew!
