Canadian made Philco Model 730 - Guest - 01-24-2006

I just came into possession of this radio/record player. It was my parents and it was stored upstairs(unheated) for the past 30 years . My mother said she thought it still worked but after getting it home, guess what?,,, Nothing Icon_sad . Can anyone tell me what to do now? The door needs repair as my nephew when he was a toddler sat on the door and the screws pulled up through the veneer. I plan on repairing it and give it a new finish. I remember as a young lad sitting in front of this as it was the only radio we had then. It has 5 tubes 50X6 , 35L6 , 7C6 , 7B7 and 7A8 . The 50X6 was unreadable as it was totally black. Luckily someone had written tube numbers below the sockets. Any help would be appreciated..

Jake I think that is a 50-51 model, Ron may be able to trace the exact US model number so that you can download the schematic from nostaliaair site. I wouldn't try to plug it in since more than likely the electolytic filter caps are bad and could short out. I think most of the radios during this time were transformerless types and the 50X6 tube would tend to support that thought. If it has sentimental value you may find someone locally to re-cap the chassis for you and you can make the minor repairs to the cabinet.

Thanks for the advice Icon_biggrin . I think a similar model is the 51-1731 but it is listed as BC and FM. The one I have is only BC probably because there were not many FM stations in Canada at that time. I downloaded the schematics for the 51-1731 and does not seem to match what I have in my unit although the record player matches. I'll try http://www.justradios.com/ . They may have schematics for this unit.
Thanks again Icon_smile

I found a schematic for a Philco 46-1201 that has all of the same tubes except for the 50X6. It uses a 50Y6GT which has the same characteristics but different basing. This may be equivalent to the 730. Icon_confused:
