Studebaker Philco S4627 -
Antipodal - 10-07-2022
Hi everyone, I have just got this model of Philco car radio. I have got the schematic from Radiomuseum but I am wondering if there is any more info on this set available. Riders for 1949 does not list it under "Studebaker" and I don't know what the Philco model number is . Can any one help? Thanks all.

Seems to have a lot of information.
With push/pull output people down the street will hear you coming.

Played around with a somewhat later Philco /Studebaker from the 1950s, the thing had fantastic sound for an AM radio. One of the best

Thank you both for replying.I have printed off all the info there - what I was looking for and most helpful.I picked up the Studebaker set along with a Midwest Chassis 7 - 36 at our local vintage car swap meet ,reputed to be the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, yesterday.Tho' a certain person located domestically insists today I can only listen to one radio at a time.

Hi Antipodal,
Listen to one at a time? Fire 'em all up at one time and impress the domestically located person (Oops, maybe that person may not come non-domestic! Ms. Fixr is not impressed with my hobby.)
I am a Tech Support Specialist for a BioMedical company (hopefully retiring after 40 years with them) and sometimes receive calls from Australia and New Zealand. Amazing to talk to someone on the almost exact opposite "side" of the world!!

Hi everyone,Thank you for your help - it is invaluable. I have the schematic and the other info too, now.Great!
The power supply is now active once some electrolytics had been replaced and the vibrator even got going reliably. Both 7C5s are going tho' at this stage not balanced. So, work to do.
My set lacks the foam rubber circle round the speaker on the outside which I presume seals the speaker against the grille in the dash. Are these available , or has anyone fabricated one, and if so, how? Thanks everyone and cheers. And enjoy that retirement , Mr Fixit- after 40 years you've earned it!

You will probably be better off cutting out your own from a sheet of Styrofoam, depending on the thickness.

This radio now goes. And, boy , does it go well! Now I'm working my way through the paper caps -check the radio goes, turn it off, replace one cap, turn it on,check it goes, replace next cap ...and so on. Tho' at this stage the permeability tuner is stuck in one place, fortunately on a good local station. More work to do there.

Yes, and don't forget to tune the antenna pad when you reinstall it in the car. Unless, of course, you are lucky enough to have the antenna on the bench. Don't ask how many times I forgot to do it. But I was limber enough to get to it.

I would recommend using closed-cell furniture foam seat material for the circle around the speaker. Styrofoam is too rigid, and prone to "squeaking" rubbing against other components. Spray adhesive can be used to adhere it to the speaker frame, or the cabinet depending how it was originally installed. Take care and BE HEALTHY! Gary

Thanks, Gary. I now know what to ask for at our local upholstery shop. Great!

I believe what they are talking about is called "backer rod" they sell it in hardware stores, and home centers, to fill large gaps, such as in a brick wall, so that the mortar doesn't get pushed out the other side.
