1960 Philco Record Cabinet - Leelee92 - 09-28-2025

So my Mom gave me my Great Grandmothers, I assume 1960s, PHILCO record cabinet. It came with the manual but it doesn't make sense to me. I can't get the speaker volume to go up as it is very quiet and the radio half is not working or I am just dumb and can't figure it out. I got the turntable to spin and work though. It was stored in a garage for decades so it is musty. I have cleaned off the inside and outside but there was damage to the top sliding cabinet doors. I was thinking of just repainting the top a different color just bacause I am not talented enough to repaint the wood effect it has currently. Any thoughts? I may need to find someone to open her up and fix the speakers and maybe update the cord. Vintage plugs make me nervous.

Somewhere on the back, inside the cabinet or on the radio chassis there should be a Philco model number. With that information it should be possible to find a schematic that would be helpful in sorting out the problems. A set that old can have a number of issues and having someone go through the set and check the electronics is going to be the best way to get it working again. There is an Indiana Historical Radio Club https://indianahistoricalradio.org/ that you could contact and see if they can suggest someone local that would be willing to take a look at it.

Cabinet refinishing does take some skills but some folks here might have some suggestions for you. If it were me, I would not paint it but, short of a refinishing job, I might try something like Restore-A-Finish on it. I'm assuming its a wood with some type of veneer on it I'm not really familiar with the radios of this vintage.
