Speaker Grunow model 680 8 inch speaker - murf - 10-20-2025

Hi guy's,
Came across an interesting concept on repairing an old 8 inch speaker cone on a Grunow model 680 cathedral radio.
Cone on the speaker apparently was shot, so they mounted about a 4 inch pm speaker inside the speaker frame after removing the damaged cone
Now I have to figure out whether I want to find another 8Pm speaker or have this one reconned.
Maybe if someone has one for sale, I could buy it from you versus driving 100 miles to have mine reconned?
What would you suggest?

Hi Murf, were you thinking Midwest Speaker in Roseville? I took a 1920s RCA 100 in to them for an estimate. They couldn't help me because they couldn't match the size to their standard cones. Said it was too deep. So, I ended up mounting a 6 inch hifi in the center, similar to what you found. Worked beautifully.

You could try buying a generic 8'' cone and trying it, but measure the inside rim of the basket before you do. the issue might be that the spider, and voice coils are missing. I can't speak for what speakers Grunow used but I think they probably bought and rebranded speakers made by an outside manufacturer like Brand Z, or Crosley used to. A lot of Brand Z sets used Rola speakers, at least the bracket over the field coil looks like a Rola.
