Does anyone recognize this radio? It's being advertised as a Philco and I can't find any Philcos that match. Closest I found is the 505 model.

I don't think it is a Philco.

Could be an Airline.

I tried to increase the image, but the name on the bezel becomes unreadable. Joe

There is an Airline radio (a couple of models, 62-79 and 72, I think) that have exact same grillwork. But they have that AK-style escutcheon.

If I really stretch the imagination, I could possibly see "Airline in it", but the font would be different.
Also the name could start with either A, P or D and end by "ic". Or "ne".
If someone has an image sharpening software, it could be tried.

It does look a lot like the Airline 62-84 lowboy except for the escutcheon. I don't see any other photos in the Bunis CD-ROM that look close.

Yes, plus the legs are a little different. But the grill is exactly the same.

It's a Philco 30 in one of several optional cabinets. Battery operated TRF with 8 tubes, pp output. Wow, 100 watts on a battery set. The first thing I noticed was the knobs didn't look like Philco. I checked with the auction lister and she sent me a photo closeup of the chassis label.

Rod,
Did she send you the close-up of the escutcheon?
This is as much a Philco 30 as I am Sir Sean Connery.

These above are the 30 radios. Highboy, Lowboy and a console. You know what chassis in there. Do you think it would fit?
Ask for the close-up of the escutcheon.

I think that it's the same cabinet as one of the 1932-33 model Airline sets, but I'm not sure what chassis is in that cabinet. The Airline model linked to I would not mind owning. I've seen ads for surplus cabinets, either from bankrupt radio manufacturers, or ones that had left overs from last years models. They would come with blank front panels that one would have to drill. There were also cabinet/furniture companies that would sell aftermarket cabinets, we've seen a few pop up over the years with a Philco chassis fitted into them.

Arran

The photo she sent is of the chassis model tag and power requirements. It doesn't have any mention of Philco but she said that she identified it as a Philco and after she went and looked then found the model number on the tag. The radio is in a separate location and she had to be there for a different reason and she checked for me. The only other photo is a poorly lit shot of the back. I don't see any power transformer so I wouldn't be interested in having to deal with that situation.

100 Watts? Out of 2 '31s at 180V with cathode bias? According to the RCA Receiving Tube Manual RC10 (Ca 1932?), a single 31 in Class A operation with cathode bias and 180V B+ is 375 mW (0.375W). In push pull, I suspect that the most that you will squeeze out of a pair of 31s is about 800 mW. Tubes designed for Class B Push Pull service in battery radios such as 19s or a pair of 49s is about 2W.

Well, if you guys are curious enough I'll bid on it. Auction ends Sunday night, I can pick it up Monday. If nobody else bids then it'll cost me about seven bucks. If nothing else, I can scrap it and save the Philco escutcheon (if that's what it is).
We could have a mystery reveal.

From trying to sharpen it (one could call tthe success "moderate" with an awful big stretch of imagination) and squinting a bit, I think it says "Airline".
The last 4 letters are "line". Confusing thing is "n" is disproportional and a smaller "e" after that duped me into thinking it was "lic".
Befor the larger "n" (cursive) are "L and I".
The first letter is a very ornate "A".
My bet is on "Airline".

Mine, too. One problem with some store brands such as Airline, Silvertone, and Truetone, is the number of manufacturers who built those brands.
