Philco Model 70A "Lowboy" - VintageGuy95 - 03-28-2026

Hello,

I am new to the forum and I am hoping to get some help with a family heirloom.

I was recently preparing for a move when a metal beam fell on my dad's Philco that he inherited from his mom and dad. It cracked part of the front grill (photos attached). I was able to find two pieces that clicked back together but was unable to find the other pieces. I assume that either due to age or impact, they were pulverized.

He left it to me when he passed as a repair and restoration project (a majority of parts were missing) when i was older as we enjoyed fiddling with Pioneer, Sansui, and Kenwood stereos.

Is this possible to fix in any way? I have had trouble finding information about the model or the type of wood (to try and do an epoxy fix).

Also, if you know of any body able to help or do restorations it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I would just use a wood glue, and some sort of clamps, binder clips will probably suffice, to put the large pieces back. To me it looks like there enough pieces there to perform a near invisible repair, at least with the walnut veneer that goes on top, save gluing the walnut veneer on for last. If there are small chips out of whatever is underneath some filler should do the job, you can shave off the excess with something like a scalpel or x-acto knife, and sandpaper. The part you show with the dent, that can be fixed with carful use of a damp rag, or paper towel, and a clothes iron, a soldering iron will also work, placed right over the dented area. When your cabinet had a finish on it, a lot of the damaged areas would have been covered by paint or shaded lacquer, so al long as the pieces are glued in straight, and smooth, they will be nearly invisible once a finish goes back on.
Regards
Arran

Hi VintageGuy95, welcome to the Phorum.

Nice label on that chassis.

If you're looking for electronic restoration you might try Jim Lindenas, jlindenas@gmail.com. He's in Orillia and does YouTube videos about repairing tube radios. Nice day trip to the lake country.
