Model 77 Questions -
Uffda - 12-23-2010
I just picked up this lowboy from Goodwill for $10. Two 45s (one globe) and an 80. The cabinet is hacked with a warped and split top and veneer chipping so I guess it will go for parts.
It looks like it was made overlapping the 70 Cathedral. Could I be lucky enough that this is the same speaker? I have a spare 70 cabinet. How about the dial bezel? What parts are worth
saving besides the transformer? The speaker cloth has no tears. The small center knob is chipped. I assume the others are original.

Phil,
Ron has a service bulletin on speakers available for download. It shows which speakers are used in the various models and gives specifications also:

Thanks Carl, and Ron for that handy bulletin. Looking at the list I see the replacement speaker for my H is the H-17 which is also the replacement for models G and H-2.
So I am inferring that the H, G and H-2 are also interchangeable.

Yes, those speakers are interchangeable.
Let's see...what else can you salvage from the 77 besides the power transformer?
The grille cloth. That "falling leaves" pattern is not being reproduced, and is needed on every June-December 1930 Philco console model except the 20 console.
The knobs. Someone may want those for their 1928-30 Philco.
The dial scale. It's the same scale as used on models 30, 41, 96, 111, 112 and 15.
Filter choke, audio interstage transformer, filter condenser can. There are some other, older Philco models that can use the choke and interstage. The filter can is only used on Models 76 and 77, but maybe someone else needs one?
Just some ideas.
I almost forgot to mention: The speaker in the 77 is
not the same speaker used in the 70 cathedral. It is the same as used in nearly all Philco consoles between June 1929 and June 1931 (note that the 1929 models used a different speaker plug). It could be used in a 90
console or 111/112, but the sound will be muffled because that speaker probably has that solid, stiff spider used on their 1930 speakers.

Thanks lots Ron. I think my first order is to take more pictures and offer it free for pick up sans tubes. I probably won't be getting anymore 1928-30 keepers. A couple of later tombstones and my Philco jones may be sated. If no takers here or that other place I'll swap it out for parts. Tossing anything that has survived 80 years makes me feel ill. But "this might come in handy someday" clutter is going to force me out of my house if I don't change my ways.

I hear you. After Christmas I plan to offer some console speakers here; they are taking up too much room. If no takers here, they will be offered on the alt...er,
antique radio forum. I might get rid of some other items as well.
I let go of a lot of parts when I moved from Evansville to here. But I find that I still have a lot of stuff. As you say, it's hard to just toss out 70-80 year old parts.
