38-7 bought today - FStephenMasek - 02-19-2011

I got a 38-7 today at the SCARS auction for $35 - the winning bidder decided to sell it to me after the event. Any tips or "gotchas" on the cone-centric mechanism?

There's some good write-ups about the Cone Centric Tuning on Chuck Schwark's website.

I understand there were different dials for different regions of the country available for this radio, with call letters of stations. I wouldn't mind finding one with CKLW on it.

This one has a dial (or is is just the outer ring?) for the San Francisco area.

Oh, I never thought it may be just an outer ring rather than the whole dial. Interesting.

The entire dial is one piece, and different ones were printed up for different parts of the country. I think there was also a version available with no call letters imprinted on it.

Congratulations on your acquisition, Stephen. If you can fix that stain on top, you should have a very nice set.

That looks like a burn mark on top, depending on how deep it is you may or may not be able to remove it, other then that it looks pretty good.

Nice little set. I have one like this one, and also the chairside model.

I seem to recall that Chuck Schwark was trying to get a list of different dial scales that were made for this model. I wonder how far he got.

I have a Detroit area dial scale, and it does have CKLW on it. However, the '38 model sets were made before the great frequency change of 1941, so none of the station locations on the Cone-Centric dial scales are correct for today. On the Detroit scale, CKLW is at 1030 KC. It's 800 KC now. Also on the Detroit scale, there is a CRCW at 600 KC. I don't remember it at all.

Re: 38-7 bought today - Michael Dennis - 02-23-2011

It's at 800 now, isn't it? I believe it started on 540 in 1932. Regardless, I like the 38-7 with CKLW on the dial. Didn't the 38-4 also have these regional dials?

I've lived in the Detroit area since the 1940s and don't remember a CRCW. CKLW is presently at 800 kHz and has been as far back as I can remember.

I did compile a listing of the various Cone-Centric dial part numbers.
They were available only to Philco Dealers to customize a set when purchased.
Different sales regions were sent different sets, etc.
Have to look thru my archive.

I just added the Cone-Centric Dial Listing info on my website.

Just go to the Cone-Centric section of my site, scroll down to the "Installing the Dial Card"
portion and you will see the new link to the PDF listing for Cone-Centric Dial Card Listing.

http://www.philcorepairbench.com/conecentric/index.htm

By the way, if you have a Model 38-4, 38-, or 38-22 Cone-Centric set that has a dial card NOT on my listing, I would apprciate your sending me an email or PM with the radio model number, the dial part number, station call letters and the dial frequencies for those stations?

Thanks,

Chuck

Chuck:

Very interesting. My 38-4 is from Columbus. I've always suspected as much. It's hard to believe I've owned this radio for 12 years.

The dark spot on the top of my radio appears to be a spill, perhaps of wax. I scraped it with my fingernail at the auction, then briefly scraped most of it off after bringing it home. Today is cool, but sunny, so I may strip the cabinet.

Chuck's dial listing is quite interesting. I did not check all of the stations, but the Los Anegles dial is still correct for KFI (640) and KNX (1070).

CRCW in Windsor went on the air in 1935 and later became CBE.
