Are there any AM FM tabletop w/ shadow meter -
Marsupial - 04-28-2011
I've been trying to find out if they ever made a tabletop with AM/FM that has a shadow dial.
I found about the 37-630T that has 3 bands and a shadow dial, but it is AM and two SWs... up to when did they make them shadow meters?

No, there aren't any.
Philco stopped using shadow meters after the 1938 season. So, you won't find a shadow meter in any Philco model that has FM.

Just to add to what the Boss sez. Early FM sets came out in '42 or so but that used whats called the FM 50 band. It was around 50mc, like 50-55mc.After the war the FM 100 band was add. That's the FM band we use today. About 1947 or so the FM 50 band was dropped leaving the FM 100 band. The Hams got the old '50 band and called it the 6Meter band. I don't know if Philco ever made any but for a short time Zenith made some sets that have both the FM 50 and 100 bands.

No, Philco did not make any radios which could receive both "old" and "new" FM. It seems to indicate that they may have had one or more such receivers on the drawing board for 1946, but these were ultimately never produced.
We're getting a little off-topic now, but I wonder why Philco chose to de-emphasize FM during the decade of the 1950s. There were two years (1955 and 1956) when they did not produce any table model sets with FM.

Its all FM related, and very interesting. Thanks for the answers guys!
Why did they stop producing shadow meters?

Most manufacturers went with eye tubes as the 'mechanical' shadow meter went out of style. Philco never did. Not sure why, maybe a question of patent royalties? Post-war there were some AM/FM models from other manufacturers that used an eye tube.
