38-116x trouble - bm071 - 06-23-2011

I'm ready for the virtual beer..maybe 2!!!
Just aquired a 38-116xx and someone repalced the 6r7 tube with a 6sr7gt, removed the cap wire and re-vamped a few things under the chassis. Has anyone ever done anything like this? Right now I've only replaced all filters, I have power and a little static thru the speaker but no response at all in the volume, tone or band controls. I am wondering if this change could be the issue and the person stopped because it did not work. Any thoughts? I've ordered the schematic from the repair bench so as soon as I get it I'll be going thru the chassis one resistor at a time I'm afraid. Right now looking for instant gratification...like to hear it talk!!

Ya never know. I worked on a fella's Zenith once and it had been re-wired to use a 6SF5 (metal) instead of the original 6F5G. Hummed badly. I never could figure out why so I put it back to its original state and it played perfect. Seemed like a valid modification to me.

Since your radio is completely dead there could be any number of issues but I always start troubleshooting by looking at mods made earlier.

Riders 1st Edition (1950) tube substituion guide shows the 6SR7G to be an excellent substitute for the 6R7G if the wiring was done correctly! Run up a pinout comparison list and check it out. Probably have other problems in your radio? Good luck Icon_smile

Thanks John,
Do you have or know a link where I could find the Rider info? I had just a little time last night and did a quick search for info but found nothing. Today I will try Nostaligia Air's search page. I will eventually try to get back to original but I would like to at least see if the modifications were done correctly.

Sorry, I didn't get back with you on the Riders. I bought my tube sub guides from Gary at PTOP. He has an extensive list of tube manuals and sub guides for sale at very reasonable prices. Obviously you have found the tube pinouts at NA. Another good source, if you haven't seen it, is http://www.nj7p.info/Tube.php for looking up tube data. I agree with you if I had a 116 I would convert it back to original also. Good Luck. John
