Gift from FIL. sweet - keithpgdrb - 12-27-2011

New guy here, and new proud member of the Philco family. Father in Law gave me this for christmas. he restored the outside, I'm responsible for the inside! lol. Look forward to the knowledge here for help with that. Picking it up at the house later in the week. Not sure of the exact model and such, or what needs doing, but I'm excited, because its beautiful.

It's either a model 18 or 118! They are both excellent 8 tube radios, main difference is the 118 has a larger shortwave band.

You have a super radio to start your Philco collection with. But beware, you will soon be a Philco addict like the rest of us!

Re: Gift from FIL. sweet - keithpgdrb - 12-29-2011

It is indeed a 118 via the lable inside. On initial inspection, there is a rip in the speaker cone, and the power cord has been cut. The power cord issue is good and bad. Bad because I have to put in a new one. But good because I was told the radio worked before the cord was cut.

A 118 should look like this one. I have one in the basement.

Mike

You and Glenn have 118H sets. The OP's set shown above is a 118X.

Re: Gift from FIL. sweet - keithpgdrb - 12-29-2011

I still have to read through a lot of this site. but what is the significance of the X? My unit says 118. I think I read that they leave off the X, but what is the actual change? is there a difference between a 118 and the X version?

Re: Gift from FIL. sweet - gary rabbitt - 12-29-2011

Hi Keith,
Nice set!
Just go slow on the chassis if you have not worked on one before. The cord being cut had probably saved the components from being burned, if the caps or other parts/wiring have shorted.

The cone may be an easy repair.
Good luck!

Please see this page on my site:

http://www.philcoradio.com/tech/letters.htm

This will explain the significance of the letters "X", "H", "B", etc.

Re: Gift from FIL. sweet - TA Forbes - 12-30-2011

For me "X" is what wives and girlfriends become......

RE: Gift from FIL. sweet - keithpgdrb - 04-29-2013

whew.. been a while. but I'm finally getting back to this project. So a quick question. Since the X in 118X refers to the speaker placement, I would need the 118 schematics correct?

RE: Gift from FIL. sweet - TA Forbes - 05-01-2013

There are several code 118s but yes, getting schematics for a 118 will get you in the ballpark.

RE: Gift from FIL. sweet - keithpgdrb - 09-14-2013

updated the first post with the pictures of it at home. I was looking at the tubes, but I'm not sure if my tester can test them. I cant find the tube numbers in my Eico 667

Not only is Your tubes not listed for Your Tester, but You Do Not have any Tube Sockets for the Tubes You want to check.. These Tubes are Alot Older than Your Tube Tester.. You need a different Tube Tester for the Tubes You have..
