Replacing a speaker - OzRadio - 10-20-2006

I'm still working on my philco 40-180 and need to replace the speaker. How do I know what kind of speaker to look for? Does it have a model number or does the schematic specify? Cany anyone suggest a reputable parts dealer for such a piece?

I'm in the same boat. Looking for a speaker for a 41-245. Previous owner replace original speaker with a PM one. I heard this is the place to go for used parts http://www.oldradioparts.com/ . A schematic usually lists part numbers but they will be philco numbers. Don't know if that will help finding a replacement but I'd include all info you have in the request.

I see the speaker you need was originally 12 inches in diameter, with an 1100 ohm field coil and 5.1 ohm voice coil. The speaker from a 41-280 is an exact replacement, as are speakers from Models 42-380 and 42-390. In fact, probably any 1940-42 12 inch Philco speaker would work.

These type of chassis and speakers are on eBay all the time. There are probably several collectors who have one or more of these in their basements. Perhaps a "Wanted" ad in the Phorum "Philco Wanted" section might help...? Icon_smile

Danny, your situation is different, since you are dealing with a table model set. You need a 5 inch speaker with a 1700 ohm field, 3.5 ohm voice coil. A quick glance through some Service Bulletins, cross-referenced against a 1946 Philco parts catalog, indicates that speakers from Models 40-130, 40-135, 41-230, 41-235, or 41-240 will serve as exact replacements.

Yes, I found the speaker part number on the schematic for your set, and looked it up in Philco's 1946 parts catalog (Quick Selector Parts Directory). Then I looked up the part number of the speaker of a few other models from their schematics, compared them to the 1946 parts catalog, and that's how I came up with the cross-reference I gave you.

There is a 42-380 chassis and speaker on eBay right now, ending tonight.

The speaker in this auction is the speaker you need. If the knobs are in good shape, you could sell them to Bill T for his 1946 radio-phonograph? Sell the chassis to someone else? Who knows. But this is but one example, the 40-180, 41-280 and 42-380 were some of the most popular Philcos in their time, so there are a lot of them floating around. And there are enough junkers of those types that you should have no problem finding a speaker.

Yes, it will. According to my 1946 parts catalog, it should be the right size and correct field coil resistance.
