Volume Control Wiring Question - Gene Pederson - 04-08-2012

Happy Easter to all!!

I recently acquired an Admiral/Continental 960 8K. The set had 99%recapped and I did the last one. The volume control had been replaced with an IRC control. Seems that when the set is turned on I can only move the volume control a tiny bit and the increase in volume is huge.
This is a combo on/off and volume switch. The shaft had been cut a tad short so I got out my IRC book and found that I have a new control. There is a difference however between the new one I have and the one that was in the set. The new one has the three tabs on the top and one tab on the bottom of the control. What was in the set had no bottom tab.

I am wondering if the pot is wired incorrectly. Here is a link to the schematic and two pics of the control. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks for the schematic link.

The schematic shows a VC with a tap for better bass response at low volume. The "bottom tab" should be the tap terminal. The drawing seems to show the tap at around 400K for the 1Meg VC. Use an ohm meter to verify that the resistance is not abruptly changing from a break somewhere. Of course follow the drawing that the wiring is correct. Seems you may have followed someone's incorrect wire hookup from the past since the VC found in the radio did not have a tap. You will want to verify that R6, C6, and TC are wired too.
