Connector at rear of Philco 41-280 and 41-250 chassis - Raleigh - 05-06-2007

I have a 41-280 and a 41-250. Both have a 3 pin socket near the center of the rear of the chassis. I can't tell from the schematic what that is to be used for. I have seen a couple of pictures on ebay that show what looks like a coil (in a can) plugged into that socket.

Anyone have any idea what that was used for?

Not positive, but I think Philco sold a special outdoor antenna kit that attached to the socket.

This picture won't be on ebay very long, but here is a link to a picture of the thing that looks like a coil that is hanging from the rear connector. This is on a 41-287, but the chassis looks very similar to the ones on the radios I mentioned.

That coil (or whatever it is) does look like it has screw terminals, maybe for an external antenna. It also looks like it is switched with the band switch, which would also make sense for an external antenna, like Terry said. So maybe it is a coil to match impedence for the external antenna.
