116PX back? -

I have been restoring my 116PX. Just finished the clarifiers and was wondering, did this model or any of he models with clarifiers have backs like the older pan chassis Philcos, 111, 112, and 15x's to name a few. If not, did Philco plan on the radio being against a wall? I guess I should know how the clarifiers are suppose to work. I know they are passive, but what makes them work if no pressure from the speaker is captured in a chamber?

The clarifiers are really passive dampers not radiators. They were used to reduce the cabinet resonance at specific bass frequencies. Each clarifier had a strap of lossy damping material fastened to the cone. The resonant freq of each clarifier corresponds to a cabinet resonant peak, so each acts a tuned trap, reducing the amplitude of the associated peak and therefore providing a smoother bass response.
