40-190 Update -
fossilexpress - 08-29-2013
[attachment=2363]An update on the restoration of my 40-190, which I am currently using to listen to the Bear's preseason game. Sounds great. First, I would like to thank the members of this group for their advice. So:
1. I replaced all of the capacitors. Only three issues came up; first, it was really hard to melt the old solder with my soldering iron, sometimes even with my higher wattage soldering gun. A bit of flux seemed to help. Second, the negative lead on one of the electrolytics broke off; I was able to solder it on to the stub, but I will replace it again. Third, the leads on one of the "orange drop" replacement caps was not as long as the originals, so I had to do some creative splicing.
2. Given the amount of effort it took to unsolder the old caps, I decided to leave the resistors in place for right now. Some other day...
3. The electronics for the push buttons made it very awkward to work on this chassis - they had to be carefully pushed out of the way.
4. Had to also replace the tuning cord - used fishing leader.
5. Some outstanding issues: a) the sound quality on the push buttons is much better than with the dial tuner. Something I should check here?
b) The original antenna seems to have had a cardboard cover. Something I should replace somehow?
Last - here is a picture of my beauty - case is not perfect and the grill cloth is not original. Again - thanks to all - Roy
