Silvertone 4587A - 37silverstreak - 11-16-2013

Out for a drive on a miserable November day in Wisconsin to bring home this Silvertone 11 tube console. The man I bought it from says it stills works, but I haven't tried it yet. In pretty decent shape overall except that almost all of the tubes have been replace with the later GT types, so I'll be digging up correct replacements for awhile!

I really like the look of these big gold dial Silvertones so I'm very happy to have found this one! Too bad it doesn't have the tuning eye!

Certainly looks nice! Does it have some sort of motor tuning? I am asking because of the attachment I see on the back of the tuner. Looks like it should be a good performer when you get it done. Icon_clap

Kevin, that looks in wonderful condition. Congrats. Did it come with that nice Collie?

The toothed attachment on the back of the tuner is part of a device called "Flash Tuning". I did a little reading on it as I didn't know anything about it! Evidently, it's for setting up favorite stations. when the switch is turned on the set is muted until you reach the specified station, at that point a contact breaks the circuit and the audio is turned on and a indicator light comes on. Kind of like Philcos "Conecentric" tuning. Should be fun to play with.
Jerry, that is Willow. She is my co-pilot and best buddy! Actually she is a Shetland Sheepdog, but she is large for her breed and most people call her the Lassie dog Icon_lol Shelties are smaller than Collies and come from Northern Scotland and the Shetland Isles. The funny thing about her is that if I try to get a picture of just her she won't get anywhere close to me, but every time I take pictures of new radio's I get, she will always manage to wander into the picture, maybe she is jealousIcon_lol! She wasn't too happy with me. She had to give up her backseat to the Silvertone and ride up front with me on the trip home!

Nice dog Kevin. I was thinking Sheltie but couldn't think of the name. If and when I get another dog, it will be a Sheltie. Friend had one and that was one smart dog.
As for flash tuning there were apparently different versions. Probably prior to the tuning eye and shadow graph. My Fada has the same thing. Only set up for NY stations as I guess that was where they were made. Dial above the tuning dial which had printed NY stations on it. The plastic dial showed tuned frequency (well 0-100 on the lower display) the upper dial showed the stations. Small cuts in the dial switched contacts to turn on the light at that station. Crude but interesting. You could apparently with the right tool also punch new indents into the dial for your favorite station although the flash dial would not indicate the station number.

Nice find! I will pass on to you what I was told about the flash tuning.
Be careful of that toothed section. It is very flimsy and bends easily, which will render the flash tuning inoperable.

Gene, your right they are fragile. Soooo, I stored mine some place safe from damage. Now I can't find it! Sucks when the memory goes but unless some pack rat took it away (unlikely) it is somewhere hidden in my shop and safe from damage.Icon_redface
