New find RCA 810T -
Ronin61 - 03-26-2014
Found this right around the corner from me, I really meen walking distance close. The price was right and it is complete. Good dial with no cracks and just a little bit of shrinkage . There is a crack in the glass , upper left corner but you really have to look for it. The dial string is broken and I need a dial string diagram. Here are a few pictures of the set.[Image:

I have a very similar RCA. Mine is model 86T. Mine does not have a tuning eye and it has less tubes, but it is from the same time period as yours and the dial is almost identical. The chassis restoration is very straightforward and actually very easy to work on.. You shouldn't have any issues. Also, plenty of room to work and a nice layout under the chassis.
I also had to replace the glass on mine. I went to Lowe's and got a scrap piece of plexiglass, 1/8th inch I think. It cost $1.00. You score it with an exacto knife, then snap it. If your dial cover is like mine, (they are similar, but not the same) ...RCA somehow molded those dial escutcheons around the glass. The glass sits in a slot that runs around the inside of the dial cover and there is no way to replace it without cutting. I used a dremel to cut a slot on the top edge (behind the facing), then slid the plexiglass down inside. I had to oil it with WD-40, but it is a perfect fit and looks identical to original glass. And it will never break again. Much cheaper and easier than having a custom piece of glass cut. You cannot see the dremel cut when the cover is installed.

This is one big radio measuring 20/12/17. Here is one more picture of the back with the chassis inside. And by the way the chassis looks all original.[Image:

The two 6F6 tubes and the 6N7 are replacements. RCA used metal tubes on these sets.

Replaced the electrolytics today just to make it safe to power up and it sounds great with plenty of volume. Replaced all the dial lamps, don't know how to replace the dial string/ belt so I guess I won't . This one will make it to the Bay soon. Here are two new pictures of the radio all lit up.[Image:

The dial lites look too bright . Did the radio have diffusers with the lamps? Maybe it's me.

No diffusers that I know of just brand new 6.3 volt bulbs. And the glass has been cleaned.

Why fleabay it? Keep the thing, once it is rebuilt it should be a good performer. With regard to the cracked glass, that's one of the marvels of shrinking Tenite, unfortunately the Tenite will also crack as well as the glass.

Arran

Interesting dial layout. What is the 0-10 part in the center for?
Great job.
