Philco 201X - bgorman - 05-10-2021

Hey everyone, Got this radio about 3 years ago along with 3 others and a Tube tester. A friend who knew I liked to restore them was  looking at a Tractor at his neighbors barn when he noticed the radios. He texted me I had him send photos and this was one of them. He was an older gentlemen 90's. that had intended to restore them but never got around to it. I got a steal on all of them really. I paid $35.00 for this one. Icon_biggrin Unfortunately the cabinets were in semi ruff shape, including this one. Icon_problem I'm no expert, but have had good success at restoring 4 other radios. For anyone reading this who is considering there first, I literally learned everything I know by ready countless posts from others on this site and a few others. so you could do it to. I've been saving this one, working up the nerve to dive into it. I know it's more complicated, do to it's high fidelity circuitry so will certainly need some advice. I've read the other posts about this radio on this site and researched it on the web. Here are some photos as a start

That is really a nice radio. Seems like I have said this recently, but, " I would certainly make room for one more console" if I found one of those.

Post some pictures please , of the top and bottom of the chassis when you get it out.

Is your helper a dog or a cat?

Russ

It's a cat.

One of my favorite Philco models!

Here are photos from when I restored mine. I find comparing to other examples of the same set can be pretty useful.

Lol It is a Cat. A Russian Blue to be exact. Coolest best Cat weve had. Super laid back. Anyway I do intend to post more photos and of course questions. Still working full time running a small business so bare with me if you would. Nathan thanks for the link great series of photos. Will post again soon.

Yeah.....I figured it was a cat by the tail. It is a cat's tail.

It looked so much like Fuzzy when he used to hang out at the shop. Now he likes to sleep behind the WR8-R. I think he likes the ticking of the old clock.

Looking forward to pictures.

P.S. Fuzzy is the one driving the ATV, with me behind him.

I guess I'll send a few pics of the one I did. Had no back, so I had to make this one.

His name is Coady and this is his favorite photo, when he was posing for Play Cat magazine.

Patrick very nice work. Hoping to get some advice on what toners and such to use when I get to the cabinet. I have had decent success refinishing cabinets on a few others, hope mine turns out as nice as yours. These are gorgeous radios when refinished right.

Something thats curious to me is the added on Band Switch you'll see in the photo of the back. Not sure its even a Philco brand, as there is no name, part# or anything on it. Would this have been some sort of option?  I did see this same switch in a photo on another 201X on the internet somewhere.

Patrick
I will also need to remake the back panel as you can see in the photo it was pretty beet up, Did you use Masonite and where did you get the label?

RE: Philco 201X - Patrick - 05-12-2021

Actually, I misspoke. The entire back wasn't gone, but luckily what was left included the label, which I carefully removed and then glued to the new back.

The back is panelboard, which I bought from an auto upholstry shop. It's used as a backing when re-upholstering car doors. It's the perfect thickness and stiffness, and it has the advantage of being waterproof.

Hi Bob and welcome,

https://philcoradio.com/library/download/parts/catalogs/1937/Philco%20Parts%20Catalog%201937.pdf  Go to pg 3.

I too have a 201X but it's an early one I think as it's in a 200X cabinet. It's been around for a while and I haven't dug in to it yet. It's very much like this one but isn't this the same set. https://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=206295

Happy to help you go thru your set and who know's maybe I'll get inspired and pull mine out...
