I just picked this radio up yesterday. Cabinet is in need of repair?? Finish is about gone.
I will be starting to restore it soon. Hope I’m posting in the correct place.[attachment=33694][attachment=33694]

I am not even sure what to make of it. These are two identical views of some cabinet from, perhaps, the top. Nothing else.

Because this post is apparently only about the cabinet it belongs in "Philco Cabinet Restoration," not "Philco Electronic Restoration."

That's definitely scrape and replace veneer. Be creative.

Ohhhh, people... Why panic so much? This is a great device for training even for a beginner. You can't do worse than this. But... Two hours is enough to replace the veneer and two more times two hours for sanding and applying a new varnish. And you get a device like from the factory. The one who walks will overcome the road, not the one who stands.

Peter, you've convinced me. I'm going to finish my firewood.

All that's left is to apply the last coat of varnish.

Well, here it is... A vivid example of what a person who recently complained that he couldn't do anything with his own hands can learn to do.

Well, as recently as - about 10 years ago.

Because he only knows how to work with his head. But now everything turns out great... It's not the gods who sculpt pots, but ordinary people.

Welcome to the Phorum! As luck would have it, I too have been restoring a 48-482 which was in poor shape (though, I must admit, not so rough as yours). Anyway, I had to replace the veneer on mine just as you will. Have a look at my own thread, for a bit of what I learned:

I can tell you that you’ll want to use walnut veneer. Wood dyes, stains, and toners will also help you blend the new wood to match any salvageable old wood. Older walnut tends to get a bit more orange in color due to UV light exposure, whereas newer walnut has a deeper grey/sometimes purplish undertone.

I should also add that I’ve been working behind the scenes on creating a schematic for the 48-482. I’ve worked on it intermittently for the last couple of months. Yes, the Philco Library has a scan of the original hand drawn schematic, but readability is not good on some of the smaller text and I’ve already uncovered a few errors (verified by examining two 48-482 chassis). I’ll share it online as soon as I finish combing through the RF section of the chassis to make sure the schematic is accurate. Should be done this weekend. I’ll make a thread in the electronic restoration section of the Phorum.

Honestly, I've seen cabinets in better shape meeting their glorious end as a part of the pyre in the Renninger's fire pit.
This said, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and given enough determination and, frankly, nothing to lose and everything to gain, as the French say, Pourquoi pas? - Why not?

Hey, chucksue! As promised I just made a thread in the Electrical Restoration section including a digitized schematic. Hope it saves you some time on your restoration!
