When I brought this 610B home I posted a couple pics . Now that I've finished the chassis (which went smoothly and has better reception than anything else I've worked on so far) I started cleaning up the cabinet. I thought this was an original finish until I looked a little closer. Now I'm thinking it may be the original finish with some extra lacquer or shellac added.... Here's a closer look at the side where it sure looks like someone added something to the finish ...or did they sometimes come from the factory with drips? There are also some very dark finish areas and much lighter areas like something was stripped but not completely? Thoughts?

Sorry Bob, but that is either a very poor refinish, or as you suspect someone slopped on some shellac or something; you don't see drips and runs like that from the factory. If it is just shellack you can try some denatured alcohol to remove shellac without damaging any original lacquer underneath. Unfortunately judging from the dark splotches I think you'll need to do a strip and refinish. The good news is the cabinet looks pretty solid so it should be fairly easy unless that is polyurethane on there. Good luck!

That's what I was think John, thanks! I'm going to go ahead and strip it. I really like this set. The cabinet is indeed very solid and should come out looking nice. I think the grill cloth may be original, its in decent shape...what do you think??

Well the set was with the same owner since the 40s so I suspect that it was just an attempt to keep the set looking good. I think its a pretty old refinish or "finish freshener".

I was finally able to get back to the 610B cabinet. I had it stripped, toned and lacquered 6 months ago but just finished the final rub out and wax. Put the chassis back in with all new rubber mounts and original grill cloth. We're streaming Christmas carols on it now through the SSTRAN...Ho Ho Ho....
Stripping...stripped...finished

Hello bob
Well I did one these some years ago but mine was
painted white with latex paint and
they used a pillow case for speaker grille
They went as far as painting the knobs
I had to strip and refinish to if you look in the philco photo section you will see mine
Anyway yours looks very nice also I found out this radio sounds great
And receives stations nicely

Thanks guys, this was a fun one to do and did turn out nice. Its been our Christmas player churning out carols from the SSTRAN. Rich, your radio was one of the example radios I used to tone mine. The flash photo doesn't quite do it justice. I always go to Ron's photo gallery first for the best example of the radio.
